Florida Auto Insurance Law:
Understanding the Florida Auto Insurance Law will enable you to better understand your individual auto
insurance needs and enable you to get the most for your hard earned dollar.
Florida Auto Insurance is mandatory by law for all registered vehicles in the state of Florida. The particular
statute that outlines the exact minimum requirement is known as the Florida No Fault Insurance Law. This is aptly
named because the first of two parts of the required insurance provides benefit for injuries regardless of fault in an
accident. This aspect of Florida No Fault insurance is called Personal Injury Protection or PIP for short. The
maximum benefit provided under PIP is $10,000 and a policyholder, or named insured, is allowed to elect a
deductible of no greater than $1,000. A deductible is the dollar amount the policyholder, or named insured, pays
before collecting money from the insurance company for a claim. PIP pays the named insured, household residents
of the named insured and listed drivers on the policy, for their bodily injury in the event of an accident regardless of
fault. In the event of death the maximum payment is only $5,000.
The second part of the required Auto Insurance in Florida is called Property Damage Liability or PDL for
short. This insurance pays a maximum of $10,000 (with no deductible) and is a benefit that pays for someone else’s
property, such as their car, if you’re at fault in an accident. A person who leases or finances a vehicle is required to
maintain additional insurance protection for that vehicle over and above what is mandated by the Florida No Fault
Law. Requirements for this additional insurance will be explained in your finance or lease agreement. Many other
protection options are available to choose from in a car insurance policy. Coverage options available on all auto
insurance policies include: Bodily Injury Liability, Uninsured Motorist, Collision, and Comprehensive. Additional
options are available, such as, towing, labor, roadside service, etc… but vary from one policy to another.

Properly registering your car in Florida, like most other
states, requires insurance on the vehicle. The minimum
mandatory coverage here in Florida is dictated by the
Florida Motor Vehicle No Fault Law. The required
coverage is described on this page with links to follow
for additional information. Different legal minimum
requirements for certain drivers (too many tickets,
accidents, DUI) require an FR-44 insurance filing or
SR-22 insurance filing.
