Minimum Mandatory Auto Insurance In Florida

Each State in the U.S has certain minimum mandatory requirements regarding private passenger auto insurance while operating a motor vehicle. Many States have adopted the “No-Fault” rule; where each party is required to use their own insurance to cover personal injuries. Florida is a no fault state and the minimum mandatory auto insurance in Florida is a PIP/PD. PIP stands for Personal Injury Protection, whereas PD stands for Property Damage Liability. The personal injury protection portion covers you and your passengers medical bills in the event of an accident. The property damage liability portion covers other peoples property in the event of an accident.

You may however be interested in some additional coverage which go above and beyond state minimum. Some types of coverage offered include; Comprehensive coverage, Collision coverage, and Uninsured motorist coverage. Comprehensive coverage protects you against theft, vandalism, and natural disasters. Each policy will specify which types of natural disasters are covered, such as floods, tornadoes, or hurricanes. Usually lightning strikes and earthquakes are listed as well.

Collision coverage pays in the event of a crash. When Collision coverage is elected at policy inception or added later by endorsement your car repairs will be covered regardless of who is at fault. If the vehicle cannot be repaired  a “Total Loss” is declared by the company and they will pay for a new similar year, make, and model vehicle. A deductible must be paid prior to the reimbursement or replacement of a vehicle usually $500 to a $1000 (unless a zero deductible is purchased on the policy).

Finally there is Uninsured Motorist. Uninsured Motorist coverage pays you when you are not at fault in an accident and the at fault party does not carry insurance or is under insured. This type of coverage is very beneficial and usually only costs a few more dollars a month.
